Mike’s love for Mexico started in 1950, when his parents started visiting the Republic, but it wasn’t until 1958 at age 13 that he was able to convince them to drag him along. He flew to Guadalajara and also scored Puerta Vallarta (before Liz and Richard!) that year. After living 40 years in British Columbia, he decided “enough rain” and headed to Arizona State University to obtain his M.A. in Anthropology.
His thesis, La Lucha del Barro: The Potters of Mata Ortíz, was the first anthropological work done in the village.
It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it!
