Souveneir stands crowd the plaza in fromt of the Old Basilica. The soft earth under the old basilica made it dangerous when too many people crowded in.
The Chapel of the Indians is reputedly where Juan Diego saw the vision of the Virgin Mary in 1531.
More merchant stands in the plaza on your way to the Chapel of the Well (right). The Chapel of the Indians is on the left.
The setting of the Chapel of the Well is perhaps the most picturesque of all the many chapels here.
Looking south from the Tepeyac Chapel you get an idea of how well the grounds are planned and tended for their visual spiritual effect.
This is the lovely final approach to the Tepeyac Chapel. You can see the back of the man climbing on his knees.
Looking southwest you can see the New (round) Basilica right and the Old Basilica with its gold domes left.
When you enter the gate you are in the Plaza of the Americas. Ahead is the Old Basilica (left), the Capuchin Chapel (right), and the Chapel of Tepeyac on the Cerro del Tepeyac (above center)
Waterworks in the gardens provide background for family photos. Here the water flows out of Aztec looking figures protruding from the wall.
In the Jardin (garden) de Tepeyac to the east of the hill this elaborate sculpture has been commissioned to capture the moment when the Virgin appeared to the Indians.
A cult priest entrances quite a crowd of onlookers with these 7 foot boa snakes. The eyes of the indigenous beam their awe when it gets around to the compelling touching rites.
For 5 pesos this bird will decide your fate by picking a message from the tray in front of the cage.
Surprisingly McDonalds has the franchise on food at the zoo. It is very popular. (Looking east)
Elephants at the zoo put on a show all by themselves. (Looking south)
The Lago Chapultepec between the anthropological museum and the zoo where you can rent a boat. (Looking east)
Near the Paseo Reforma entrance to the park looking southwest at the Monumento of the Niños Héroes. During the war with the USA after defending the Chapultepec Castle, six cadets leapt to their deaths rather than surrender.
Looking northeast up the Paseo de la Reforma from the Chapultepec gate you can see the tall Monumento a la Independencia in the second circle beyond La Diana Cazadora Fountain.
The main entrance of the museum, There is an upper and a lower level and a large fountain inside.
A display outside between two salas. I thought they hadn't invented the wheel.

The Monumento a la Independencia is the second circle from the park.
Looking southwest back to the park near the west end of Paseo Reforma. The gardens are well tended.

Looking west from the roof of the Hostel Moneda, the huge National Palace is on the left, then the distant Latin America Tower is center, and then to the right are the towers of the Cathedral.
The entrance to the National Monte de Piedad, the country's pawn shop (looking west from the cathedral). It is chock full of jewelry (and guards).
A block east on Calle Moneda. Since this street dead ends at the zocalo, it is virtually a pedestrian walkway. The lower white flag marks the entrance to the Hostel Moneda
Looking north at the cathedral there is a stage erected with a popular band playing.
Looking directly west you can see the Latin American Tower up Avenida Madero.
Looking south at the huge Mexican flag in the center of the zócalo.
Looking northeast just a few hundred yards in this direction is the Templo Mayor - one of the ancient Aztec temples that is being excavated.
Looking south at the Gobierno del Distrito Federal, there was a bazar being held mostly selling clothing but also some food..
Again looking north, the feathered headresses are impressive.
Looking north at the Cathedral Metropolitana, they are dancing around sacred objects of their faith. The cathedral is gradually sinking unevenly into the soft soil here.
To the right of the Cathedral (east) is the red Sagagrio (sacristy) Metropolitano built in the 18th century to house the archives of the archbishopric.

“Mexica” is the word the Aztecs used to refer to themselves. It became the name for the city and the country of Mexico. There are about as many tourist attractions in and around Mexico City as you will find in the entire country – making it a city not to miss in your travels.  Photos taken May 2001.
